ABOUT THE PROJECT & BOOK

Great Questions Canada is a concept built around the spirited analysis of twelve of Canada’s leading commentators whose ideas and debates surrounding fundamental Canadian issues culminated into the 1999 publication: GREAT QUESTIONS OF CANADA. Edited by the then-Dominion Institute co-founder, Rudyard Griffiths; Great Questions of Canada asks Canadians to consider various viewpoints on topics such as history’s value in modern Canada, the role of Canadian symbols and heroes and the ever shifting idea of a Canadian identity.

What The Historica-Dominion Institute is asking is for young Canadians continue to explore answers to some of our nation’s most pressing issues. Through your contribution you will add a new piece to the framework of the Canadian consciousness.

The GREAT QUESTIONS ESSAY COMPETITION was established in 1999 as a way to encourage students to contribute to the dialogue of Canadian identity. The competition encourages high school, college and undergraduate university students to consider their opinion on six key debates about Canadian history and culture.

Students are asked to submit a 1,500 word essay on 1 of the 6 KEY DEBATE TOPICS for a chance to win a $1,500 cash prize and a trip to Ottawa for the awards ceremonies!
